Protect your patients’ health information this hurricane season
Free disaster recovery checklist outlines prevention steps
Orlando, Fla. June 29, 2018 — With hurricane season upon us, it’s time to prepare for disasters that could affect medical practice operations and put patients’ electronic protected health information at risk. If you don’t know what would happen to your medical practice if your server went down right now, a Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) plan is in order.
Hurricanes and other disasters bring water, fire and other damage to patient and business data storage that can cause practices to be totally out of commission for days or even weeks. Plus, HIPAA requires medical practices to have plans in place to protect patient information no matter the cause.
Saurin Patel, CompuTech City Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, advises businesses to prepare for disaster recovery with a plan that includes 15-minute backups followed by sending the backed up data to the cloud or off-site for optimal safety of the information. This BCDR method results in a few minutes of downtime versus a couple of weeks.
“Our BCDR systems back up your data every 15 minutes, and in the event of a server malfunction, the back-up can assume the role of the server. This means your network is still operational while your server is being fixed – which means patients can be served when they need you the most,” Patel said.
The 2018 hurricane season is predicted to bring 14 named hurricanes and tropical storms, according to the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project. Two of those are expected to be Category 3 or higher storms. With this in mind, CompuTech City has put together a disaster and recovery checklist, How to Withstand a Disaster and Recover Completely, that can be used to prepare for disasters. The free checklist can be downloaded at computechcity.com/disaster-and-recovery-checklist.
